Note in Passing: Doris Day has been honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences only once - with a Best Actress nomination for her performance in "Pillow Talk" (1959). Somehow, her terrific work in "Love Me or Leave Me" (1955) passed under the Academy's radar. She has never been considered for a special Oscar for her overall work (or her invaluable box-office prowess), or for a Lifetime Achievement nod, reportedly because Day has shown reluctance to leave the bliss of Carmel to attend the ceremony. She obviously prefers the company of animals to movie denizens. Smart woman. Anyway, Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, send a film crew to Carmel and give her an award already!

  1. I'm thinking Doris is ready for a serious evaluation.

  2. Give this woman a special Oscar already! They gave one to Debbie Reynolds. And if they can give one to a relative newbie like Steve Martin, why not Doris Day?

Doris Day aside, Joe, thanks for your expertise. There is fascinating and important stuff posted here that is just not being reported anywhere else.

  4. I love Doris! The Criterion Theatre marquee shown in the background of the wonderful photo that you posted reminded me how great the film version of South Pacific might have been with Doris as Nellie. She has always been hugely undervalued. Her performance with John Raitt in the "There Once Was A Man" number in The Pajama Game is totally smashing! Regarding the Honorary Oscar, it has been awarded quite a few times without the honoree in attendance, so I could never figure out why she has been overlooked considering how long she ranked as a number one box office attraction. If you visit her website you can send her a birthday greeting and also donate to her animal charity.

  5. Kevin- Thanks! BTW, that duet with John Raitt in “The Pajama Game” was sung live. Day apparently did all her singing in the film live, when possible. “I’m Not at All in Love” was another. She is simply great. -J
