The character of Philomena is so multi-dimensional -- literal-minded and almost completely without a sense of humor or irony, yet enormously kind and empathetic, unapologetically middle-brow, yet surprisingly sharp about people. And Dench encapsulates it all in one of the finest screen performances I've ever seen. Her co-star does amazing work too. DON'T MISS THIS FILM!Nancynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18439960.post-91631504923790350882014-01-03T08:24:00.465-05:002014-01-03T08:24:00.465-05:00While the movie held me with it's narrative, w...While the movie held me with it's narrative, what really fascinates me about it is how well Frears mixed and combined genres here.paul g.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18439960.post-76611836844554584852014-01-02T17:25:40.500-05:002014-01-02T17:25:40.500-05:00Melodrama? I'm happy that you didn't call it that. <br />I have a hard time calling Frears's film a melodrama. It takes its time tracing out the grounds for conflict, which seems at odds with melodrama’s rashness.Peter Lucasnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18439960.post-41970643717632989572014-01-01T21:19:01.743-05:002014-01-01T21:19:01.743-05:00I just love the delicate inspiration in Frears’s w...I just love the delicate inspiration in Frears’s work. Far from being just a great formalist, he is a classical filmmaker with a deep understanding of the human heart.Briannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18439960.post-1768288207213784852014-01-01T13:56:55.494-05:002014-01-01T13:56:55.494-05:00I found this film to be both appealing and honorab...I found this film to be both appealing and honorable, despite whatever literary licence it takes.
